El Corte Ingles
The bulldozer of retailing in the whole of Spain, with a department-store
monopoly since it swallowed up its only competitor, Galerías
Preciados, in 1995. The former Galerías store in Avda Portal
de l'Angel, left to gather dust for years, is to reopen as
a megastore specialising in music, audio equipment and books.
Not only does El Corte Inglés provide all the goods you expect
to find in a department store, you can also have keys cut,
shoes re-heeled, hair and beauty treatments carried out, and
meals or drinks in the rooftop café. The air-conditioning
offers respite from a hot August day. Should there be anything
you can't find in the main stores (and you have a car) the
company also has a giant hypermarket, Hipercor, in Sagrera
on the north side of the city.
