El Escorial, or by its full name Monasterio de San Lorenzo
del Escorial, is one of the most impressive buildings in
Spain. It was built by Felipe II, to honor his victory over
the French in 1557. The Monastery lies on the southern side
of the Guadarrama Sierra. The austere style of its architecture,
a break with previous styles, had a considerable influence
on Spain for more than half a century.
