People
The majority of Russians are descended from people called Slavs,
but there are small numbers of about 100 other ethnic groups. This
includes Ukrainians, Belarussians, Jews and Armenians. Most Russians
live in European Russia, the west of the country.
Threefourths of the populations live in towns and cities.
Russian cities have huge populations, so many people live in overcrowded,
highrise apartment buildings. Moscow has the highest population
counts in the world, which is over eight million.
During the years of communism, education was made a top priority
by the government, but religious worship and freedom of speech were
severely restricted.
Russias strong artistic tradition has produced many famous
writers, composers, musicians and artists. The country was a world
leader in literature, drama, music, ballet, and other arts, by the
year 1800 onwards.
Language
Russian; Tatar, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Uzbek, Armenian, Azerbaijani,
Georgian, and other languages are also spoken.
