Gaylord's
In late 1995 Nassau's culinary scene got a lot spicier with
the opening of this Indian restaurant. In a handsome historic
building that dates back to the 1870s and was once a private
home, decorative plates, sculpture, and other Indian works
of art are attractively displayed around the two dining areas,
and draped silk adorns ceilings. Gaylord Special's, are the
a cocktail made from tropical juice and rum, then tuck into
the tandoori chicken, vegetable curry, and roti (nan bread
stuffed with chicken or minced lamb).

The Red Carpet
This tiny restaurant is very popular at lunch, especially
among local politicians and businesspeople, who savor the
traditional yet creatively prepared international fare. The
clever use of mirrors creates an illusion of space, while
plentiful brass gives the place a stylish look. Among the
culinary highlights are the grilled lamb chops with rosemary,
the rockfish with fried banana and almonds, and the seafood
kettle lobster, clams, mussels, shrimp, and fish stewed in
sherry peppers, black rum, and tomatoes.

Villa d'Este
Noble Italian cuisine is graciously served in a trendy trattoria
setting, accompanied by classical guitar music. The room is
attractively appointed with dark wood, upholstered chairs,
and an impressive fresco on the ceiling. The antipasto display
is effective in whetting the appetite for such dishes as baked
grouper with a pine-nut crust, fettuccine with tomato and
crabmeat, or veal saltimbocca and lobster ravioli deserves
honorary mention.
