New Year's Day

The first two days of the New Year are celebrated as a time for family gatherings.

 

Hallasan Snowflake Festival
Mt.Hallasan, Chejudo Island, 23rd - 31st January, 2000
Snowboarding, snow and ice scuplture, golf in the snow, snow dancing show.

 

Taegwallyong Snow Festival
P'yongch'ang-gun and Yong Pyong Resort, Kangwon-do, 6th - 29th February, 2000
Snow scuplture contest; traditional snow-sledding contest; hunting game on Mt. Hwangbyongsan; ski championship' semi-clad running race,etc.

 

Lunar New Year's Day
15th - 17th February, 2000
Most businesses are closed and people take several days off to visit their hometowns. Many families perform ceremonies to honor their amcestors. Traditional foods are eaten and folk games are played.

 

Independence Movement Day
1st March, 2000
This day commemorates the Declaration of Independence proclaimed on 1 March 1919 under Japanese colonization.

 

Ch'ongdo Bullfighting Festival
Ch'ongdo-gun, Kyongsangbuk-do, Mar 10-14
Bullfighting by weight category, Korean bull rodeo, farmers; dance contest, Korea-Japan goodwill bullfight, bullfight photo contest, sale of local products, bull riding, etc.

 

Korean Traditional Liquor and Cake Festival
Pomun Lake Resort, Kyongju, 17th - 21st March, 2000
Exhibition, sales and taste trial of rice cakes and wines; reenacment of traditional rice-cake and wine-shops; Talchib Burning(a folk game of circling burning bamboo playing Kanggang-sullae dance), etc.

 

Chinhae Cherry Blossom Festival
Chinhae, Kyonsangbuk-do, 1st - 10th April
Against the background of Chinhae's splendid cherry blossoms, more than 40 colorful floklore events are held to commemorate Korea's famous Admiral Yi Sun-shin.
