Travellers Essentials
Passports and Visas
Traveler must have a valid passport. Passport applications
can be obtained in the US at the local Post Office or passport
agency. Visas are required for a continuous stay of more than
three months. If your stay is shorter than three months you
only need to bring your valid passport with you. This applies
to citizens of the following countries: countries of the American
Continent (except Belize, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Peru),
Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
Driving
North American driver licenses are accepted in Switzerland.
Minimum driver's age is 18 years above.
It is easy to get around by car in Switzerland. Many traffic
signs are identical to the ones used in US and Canada, others
are self-explanatory. Alpine passes are easy to drive, but
reasonable care must be taken on more narrow and winding roads.
Passes can be avoided where there are road tunnels or car
trains.
Getting Around
Switzerland offers an excellent transportation network (streetcars,
buses). Tickets are purchased at any vending machines located
at every streetcar or bus stop. The Swiss Pass, The Swiss
Flexi Pass as well as the Swiss Card are valid throughout
the urban transportation network.
Banking Hours
Banks are usually open from Monday-Friday at 8:30am to 4:30pm.
Once a week they extend their hours. Closed on Saturdays,
Sundays and public holidays.
What to Wear
It is recommended to pack a sweater, good walking shoes, sunscreen,
sunglases, a compact umbrella and/or light rain coat. The
rules on formal and informal clothing in Switzerland are similar
to those in the USA.
Tipping
Tips are included in all hotel and restaurant bills, and in
most taxi fares. For special services like luggage handling,
it is customary to tip Sfr 2 per bag.
