The population of Malta (1998 estimate) is 379,563. The overall
population density is 1,200 persons per sq km (3,108 per sq mi).
Language
Both Maltese and English are official languages. Italian is widely
spoken.
Religion
The Maltese are predominantly Roman Catholic and speak a language
similar in vocabulary to Arabic, although its alphabet and grammatical
structure are derived from Latin.
