Arta, considered among the most beautiful regions of Greece,
is one of the four prefectures of Epirus.
Bordered by the Tzourmerka mountains and the Amvrakikos
Gulf, its diversified landscape combines the wild and striking
loveliness of the Greek mountains with the serenity of the
Gulf's shallow shores and the fertile Aracthos valley that
cuts it in two.
The capital of the prefecture, also named Arta, has a long
and important history. It is built like an amphitheatre
on the site of ancient Ambrakia, a famous Corinthian colony
founded by Gorgos, the illegitimate son of Kypselos, the
tyrant of Corinth. That Ambrakia grew to be very prosperous
can be seen from the significant archaeological finds unearthed
from the area.
