Festivals & Events
Festivals and holidays play an important part in Austrian
life. Some festivals date from pre-Christian times. One such
festival takes place throughout Tyrol at the beginning of
spring, when the people pretend to chase away the "evil spirits"
of winter. Wearing special costumes and masks, they march
through the streets and wave large sticks in the air. The
name and date of this festival vary from place to place.

Vienna Jazz Festival
Vienna, 2000
Austria's love of jazz is as strong as ever, as the
country that first welcomed Louis Armstrong and Miles
Davis again brings the sights, sounds and numerous styles
of jazz to Vienna. The festival features some of the
biggest names in jazz, but also includes blues, funk
and rock talents. In 1999, the festival offers special
presentations of Afro Cuban music, and world music.
