Navam Perahera
Undoubtedly Colombo's grandest outdoor parade, the Navam Perahera
is a fine display of Sri Lanka's traditional forms of art.
There are performances by rhythmic dancers and drummers from
around the island in a procession of over 100 caparisoned
elephants.

Independence Day
4th February, 2000
On the 4th of February 1948, Ceylon (as it was then known)
gained Independence; an anniversary which is celebrated with
pomp and pageantry.

Vesak
May
A thrice blessed day for Buddhists, Vesak commemorates the
birth of Buddha, his attaining Enlightment, and his passing
away into Nibbana. Lanterns and huge illuminated displays
decorates the streets. Roadside stalls distributes free refreshments
to passers by.

Kite Festival
October, 2000
A blare of colour and a menageric of assorted shapes and sizes
make up this spectacular contest held by the sea, in the heart
of Colombo.

Deepavali
November, 2000
This "festival of lights" is observed to welcome Lakshmi the
Godess of wealth and fortune into Hindu homes which are gaily
lit up with oil lamps and lights.

Christmas
25th December, 2000
Sri Lanka's significant Christian population enjoys the universal
joys of Christmas with singing of carols, giving of gifts
and other festive fairs.
