Traditional Boat Race

Traditional Boat Races are held at the Martapura. river which
runs through the city of Banjarmasin, to celebrate Indonesia's
Independence Day on August 17.

A bull race in which the bulls wear a klotok ( a kind of bell
) as a necklet.

Played from 10.30 am till 01.00pm at the Puro Pakualaman coinciding
with the Wiyosan Dalem or birthday (Javanese Calendar) of
Sri Paduka Paku Alam VIII.

Tanjung Karang Pusentasi Festival
Central Sulawesi, August 1-3, 2000
Cultural performance such as Traditional Dance and Music,
traditional sailing boat, demonstration of the traditional
weaving of the Donggala sarong.

Ramayana Ballet
Yogyakarta, 3-31 August, 2000
A traditional Javanese dance drama performed by 200 dancers
based on the classic Hindu epic, the Ramayana. Held on the
open aired stage at Prambanan during the full moon with the
Hindu temples and the volcano Merapi as a backdrop. The whole
sequence takes four nights and starts at 07.30 pm.

Ketoprak Performances
Yogyakarta, August 7, 2000
Ketoprak is a Javanese traditional folk drama played by a
cast of artists accompanied by the sound of the gamelan orchestra
and the voice of a professional lady singer or "waranggono".
The Ketoprak plays episodes from the Indonesian long struggle
for independence and from the lives and reigns of Indonesian
rulers in the past. Staged at the RRI Nusantara 11 Auditorium,
Jalan Gejayan, Yogyakarta from 08.00 till 12.00 pm.

Cultural festival from all the regencies in the whole island
of Timor.

Aruh Ganal Suku Dayak
Loksado, South Kalimantan, September 2000
A thanksgiving ceremony held after harvesting, every night
for a week, between July, August and September with a "Belian"
spiritual dance, led by the chief of the village.

Contest of Nanang and Galuh Banjar
Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, September 2000
To celebrate the anniversary of Banjarmasin and to preserve
the Banjar culture and tradition, a contest is held to select
a Banjarese Nanag (Mr.) and Galuh (Miss.) together with art
performances.

Renggong Horse Contest
Sumedang, West Java, September, 2000
Horse dances accompanied by the gamelan orchestra. The horses
are judged for their skills, the jockeys, cleanliness and
decoration.

Kerapan Sapi (Bull Race)
Sumenep, East Java, October 2000
This sport event was initially introduced by a Moslem missionary
named Syeh Achmad Baidawi having a royal title of Prince Katandur.
His tomb is located in the village of Bangkal. This event
is, very popular among Maduranese people.

Derawan Island Festival
East Kalimantan, October 3-7, 2000
A traditional thanksgiving ceremony of the Bajau tribe on the
island of Derawan. Prayers are offered up to God in the hope
that their living will prosper in the coming years.
