This island is rich in traditional culture, where two tribes
lives much the same way they did centuries ago. They still
use ceremonial spears and masks. The Small Nambas, who live
in interior villages of southern Malakula, have a complex
society in which men and women live separately.
The Big Nambas live in two villages in the northeast. Government
permission is necessary to visit these groups; visits to
the Small Nambas are granted only to anthropologists doing
research. Malakula can be visited either on a cruise or
by air to the villages of Norsup and Lamap.
Very basic overnight accommodations can be arranged with
the villagers, though the island is best seen on a day trip
from Efate. Located 160 km northwest of Efate and just south
of Espiritu Santo.
