Passport
A valid passport for a minimum of 6 months beyond return date
is required by all. visitors.
Visa
A valid visa is required by all except the following:
a)Nationals of Commonwealth countries.
b)Nationals of French Overseas Departments and Territories
and British Dependencies.
c)Nationals of Bermuda, Brazil, Chile, China (PR), Cuba, Korea
(Rep. of), Kuwait, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Federated States
of Micronesia, Morocco, Norway, Palau, Peru, Philippines,
Poland, Russian Federation, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand,
Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Vatican City.
d)Transit passengers continuing their journey by the same
or first connecting aircraft, provided holding valid onward
or return documentation and not leaving the airport.
Currency
Vatu (Vt) = 100 centimes. Notes are in denominations of Vt5000,
1000, 500 and 200. Coins are in denominations of Vt100, 50,
20, 10, 5, 2 and 1. Australian Dollars are also accepted in
some shops and restaurants.
Currency exchange
Exchange facilities are available at the airport and trade
banks. It is advisable to exchange foreign currency after
arriving in Vanuatu.
Credit cards
MasterCard, American Express, Visa and other major credit
cards are accepted. Check with your credit card company for
details of merchant acceptability and other services which
may be available.
Duty Free
The following items may be imported into Vanuatu by passengers
aged 15 and over without incurring customs duty:
a)200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of
tobacco.
b)1.5 liters of spirits and 2 liters of wine; 250ml of eau
de toilette and 100ml of perfume.
c)Other articles up to a value of Vt20,000.
Social Conventions
Informal wear is suitable for most occasions. Some establishments
appreciate men wearing long trousers in the evenings. Life
goes at its own pace and while modern influences can be seen
in the main centres, in the hill villages and outlying islands
age-old customs continue
Tipping
Tipping is not expected or encouraged, as it goes against
local tradition.
Getting There
By Air:
The national airline is Air Vanuatu (NF), which offers weekly
services between Port Vila and Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne
in Australia, and Auckland (New Zealand). Another international
airline serving the islands is Polynesian Airlines, which
offers a 'Polypass', allowing the holder to fly anywhere on
the airline's network.
Getting Around
By Air:
Domestic services are provided by the government-owned Vanair.
It offers scheduled services to 28 destinations within the
archipelago. The airline has three Britten Norman Islanders
and one Trislander. By Sea:
Inter-island ferries operate from Port Vila and Espiritu Santo
to the northern and southern islands. Coral and Hibiscus Tours
operate boats to various islands. By Road:
Traffic drives on the right. a)Bus:
There are limited buses serving the town centre and the airport
in Port Vila.
b)Minibus:
Frequent service available. As there are no timetables, the
most common way to catch a minibus is to flag one down and
tell the driver where to go.
c)Taxi:
These are plentiful and all are metered.
d)Car hire:
Major car hire operators have offices in Port Vila. An national
driving licence is acceptable.
