This island, in the center of the archipelago, is where
the capital, Port Vila 30,000 also known as Vila, is located.
Port Vila may well be the prettiest capital in the South
Pacific. Most of its shops, banks and some hotels are on
or near a street that runs along a picturesque harbor.
The imposing, red-roofed Parliament building stands on the
brow of the hill above the town. Behind Parliament is the
ornate Chief's Nakamal, a national ceremonial center and
the Culture Center, opened in 1995, which exhibits masks,
clubs, spears and other Melanesian artifacts.
Visitors can also climb to the top of Klem Hill for the
view, browse in the Vanuatu arts-and-crafts stores or go
out on Pango Road to visit the Michoutouchkine and Pilioko
Museum of South Pacific Art.
