People
The first people to arrive in this island are from Scotland around
6000 BC From 400 B.C, Celtic people came to Ireland from mainland
Europe. The Vikings followed them from Scandinavia in the 700s.
In 1171,Henry II of England seized land in the north and gave it
to the Protestants from England and Scotland.
Eventually in 1921,the Catholics of the south split from the Protestant
north. Their lands were named the Irish Free State and were selfgoverning
but loosely linked to the United Kingdom.In 1949,the Irish Free
State gained independence as the Republic of Ireland.

The official language of Ireland is English or Irish.
Religion
The main religion in Ireland is Christianity.
