Passports and Visas
A passport valid for three months and a visa are required
of all visitors to Nepal except Indian nationals. Tourist
visas for stays of up to 30 days are issued at ports of entry
upon arrival, though it may require a long wait. Visas are
also available in advance from Nepalese consulates and embassies.
A return or onward travel ticket is also required.
Business Hours
Banks: 10am-2pm Sunday-Thursday, 10am to noon Friday.
Shops: 10am-6pm Sunday-Friday. Many businesses are closed
or open for shorter hours on Friday, and in winter.
Government offices: 10am-5pm Sunday-Thursday during summer,
10am-3pm Friday, 9am-4pm during winter.
Money
Nepal's monetary unit is the Nepalese rupee (R), which is
divided into 100 paisa. Coins are available in denominations
of 5, 10, 25, and 50 paisa and R1 and 5. Banknotes are available
in denominations of R1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000.
Traveler's checks and currency can be exchanged at banks,
exchange bureaus, and at Kathmandu's airport.
Major credit cards, such as American Express, Visa, Diners
Club, and MasterCard are accepted in some upscale businesses
in Nepal. Some banks in the capital offer cash advances on
credit cards upon presentation of a valid passport.
Tipping
Tipping in Nepal is about 10 percent for all services.
Clothing
Always remove your shoes before entering a Nepali home. Dress
appropriately - shorts or revealing clothing are never suitable
for women. Shorts are acceptable for men only when trekking;
going without a shirt anywhere is not. Nudity is not acceptable
anywhere.
Driving Licence
International Drivers' License is required. The minimum driving
age is 18 years. Car rental companies reserves the right to
set their own limits. However, we recommend getting the services
of a driver.
