Administration
On 20 December 1999, China has resumed sovereignty over Macau, in
accordance with the Joint Luso-Chinese Declaration. The territory
will become a Special Administrative Region, a similar status to
that of Hong Kong.
Macau was officially a territory under Portuguese administration.
The Governor has been appointed by the President of the Portuguese
Republic.
An Advisory Council, with a maximum of seven Under-Secretaries in
charge of relevant sectors of the administration, aids the Governor
in his executive functions.
