Beijing Longtan Temple Fair
Longtan Park, Chongwen District, Beijing, 30th Dec 1999 - 6th Jan 2000
Held at the Longtan (Dragon Park) Pool, the main activities at the temple fair are drama, acrobatics, music, dance and other theatrical performances, cock fighting, dog taming, donkey riding, sitting in gaily decorated sedan chairs, animal taming and other folklore activities. Besides that, other entertainment and sports performances include riding on ice, dog pulling a plough, sheep pulling a dragon boat, watching winter swimming by breaking the ice, and figure skating. Visitors can also taste numerous kinds of local snacks, Court Food and other dishes.

 

Zhouzang International Tourist Art Festival
Jiangsu Province, 12 - 17 April 2000
This festival is held in Zhouzang Village, Kunshan, Suzhou in the Jiangsu Province. Main activities include handicraft competitions. Products of pottery making, stone sculpturing, wood sculpturing, bamboo carving, brick carving, embroidery, bamboo plaiting and straw plaiting are displayed and sold.

 

Dai Water Splashing Festival
Yunnan Province, 13 - 15 April 2000
Celebrated at the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Dehong and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province.
1st day: Dragon boat race, setting free lanterns to float over the festival, throwing woven bags to a future love partner and others.
2nd day: Dusting Buddha statues and other Buddhist ceremonies.
3rd day: People dressed in their holiday best splash water on each other to bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, to eliminate and avoid disasters, and place great hope on good weather for good crops and bumper harvests during the following year.

 

Luoyang Peony Flower Fair
Luoyang, Henan Province, 15 - 25 April 2000
Main attractions include flower appreciation sessions, a peony exhibition, peony calligraphy, painting exhibition, fireworks and theatrical evening performances, as well as visits to the Luoyang Ancient Tomb Museum, the Longmen Grottoes and the White Horse Temple.

 

Weifang International Kite Fair
Weifang, Shandong Province, 20 - 25 April 2000
Called the City of World Kites, the headquarters of the International Kite Association is in Weifang. Every April, the International Kite Fair is held here, where thousands of kite-lovers fly their varied kites in the shape of the dragon, phoenix, eagle, butterfly and others, painting a pretty picture in the Weifang sky.

 

Yueyang International Dragon Boat Festival
South Lake, Yueyang, Hunan Province, 5th - 7th May 2000
Activities include holding a grand folk ceremony to worship the dragon head, holding an international dragon boat invitational competition and the Dongting Lake Fishing Song Fair.

 

Qufu International Confucius Cultural Festival
Qufu, Shandong Province, 26 September - 5 October 2000
The opening ceremony of the festival is held on 26 September in the Dacheng Hall of the Confucius Temple. On 28 September, the solemn activity of worshipping Confucius is performed where there is a performance of grand temple music and dance of the "Ancient Music and Dance for Worshipping Confucius". The International Confucius Forum, performances of the story of "Confucius Travels to Many States", various kinds of folklore and cultural performances are also held.

 

Huangshan Mountain International Tourist Festival
Huangshan, Anhui Province, 25 - 27 October 2000
The festival is held at the foot of Huangshan Mountain where there are performances inspired by grand folklore; exhibitions such as Huangshan Calligraphy by Famous Persons as well as a Painting and Photographic Exhibition. There are also local tours available to visit the Huangshan ancient folklore and local residents, Taoist famous mountain scenery tour and other activities.

 

Guilin Landscape Tourist Festival
Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, 31 October - 8 November 2000
The festival will start with an opening ceremony, a Lijiang River Autumn Moon Lantern Fair and a Lijiang River Tour in the evening. You can also watch the decorative lanterns combining sound, light, color and movement. Activities such as the Bonfire Evening Gathering on Love Island, the song and dance performances by the ethnic minority will also be held. There is also a self-service wildlife barbecue for those who dare! Local tours offered include the Guilin Ancient Culture Tour and Longsheng Low Ridge Hot Spring Tour.

 

Qurban Festival
Xinjang Uygur Autonomous Region, 10 December 2000
Celebrated by the Muslims in Xinjang Uygur Autonomous Region and regions inhabited by the Uygur, Hui, Kazak and other ethnic minorities. Qurban is Arabian for "sacrifice" or "blood offering". On this festive day, Muslims usually donate a cow or goat for meat to those in need. Prayers are conducted at mosques before adjourning back home to entertain guests.
