To visit this place you can take a taxi or a minibus there.
The Pyramids are about a half-hour's drive from Tahrir Square.
The entrance fee for the entire area is ĢE 10, which allows
you unlimited viewing of the Pyramids and Sphinx. If you
hire a camel and driver to tour the Pyramids, be sure to
agree on a price first (with bargaining, about ĢE 15 to
ĢE 20 per hour).
These mausoleums were built to show the ancient Egyptians'
belief in eternal life. They contained the Pharaoh's tomb,
but were also storage places for treasures and barques (boats
for transport in the afterlife). You can actually go inside
all three pyramids, including the large Pyramid of Cheops,
built of about 2.5 million limestone blocks. It is usually
enough to visit just one pyramid, as the climb inside is
tiring and the pyramids are very similar. The smallest pyramid,
Menkaru, is the easiest to tour. Entry to the smaller pyramids
is free, but a visit to Cheops will cost ĢE 10. Remember
to buy the additional ticket for Cheops at the main entrance
gate to the Giza Plateau. On a hot day, the walk back to
the gate is long and tiring.
