The department is named after the river Seine.
It was created in 1964 when the former departments of Seine
(75) and Seine-et-Oise (78) were divided.
The flag is based on the shield adopted 1 June 1970. The shield has on azure the golden fleur de lys (based on the arms of the city of Antony); on gules the ship of argent (based on the arms of the city of Boulogne-Billancourt); in chief argent with an azure wave (based on the arms of the city of Nanterre).

This shield in white/blue was used after 1982 in the flag of the General Council, which also bears the number 92 (code of the département).
