First regional flag was issued 1905. No real example remains but it was reconstructed from written descriptions. At the same time Giménez Soler proposed a different and more appropiate flag.

A proposal by Marín Sancho

[Aragon (Spain), 1926 proposal]
by Jaume Ollé

In 1926 a regional agency for propaganda tried to covertly establish a regional flag under a trade union coverture (that happened during General Primo de Rivera's dictatorship). Five flags were proposed, the first four by the Dean of Jaca [Huesca province], Dámaso Sangorrín, and the last one by Marín Sancho. It is not known whether there was a winning entry.

1931-1936 Proposals

After the proclamation of the Second Republic, Aragon recovered some personality, and a embryonic regional government was formed. Right-wing parties proposed a white flag with Saint George cross and left-wing parties the Catalan four bars, but vertically to differentiate it from Catalonia (Principat), that already had adopted officially its traditional flag. After several years the Caspe Agreement determined that the Catalan flag would be adopted with horizontal stripes, and the differentiation mark would be the shield in the centre of the flag when the coat-of-arms was approved. (All these events later happened exactly the same once again in the late 1970's after General Franco's death). After the Civil War the projected autonomy was supressed by Franco's regime, and the subject of regional identity was taboo until 1977 when the debate started again, with many proposals.

1977 Proposals

In 1977 the struggle for autonomy and the discussion about symbols started again. The conservatives preferred designs with a cross, and several were published by the newspaper Heraldo de Aragón:

  1. white with S. George Cross, with four moors
  2. blue with white Iñigo Arista cross in canton (the [formy fitchy] cross shown in the arms)
  3. a banner-of-arms

  7. a banner-of-arms based on the arms of Sobrarbe was proposed by a well-known (not Aragonese) historian
The left supported variations of the Catalan flag, for example the proposal of the Aragon Socialist Party, in which the stars stand for the three provinces:

Andalan, a left-wing magazine, organized a contest with five finalists:

1977-1984 Official Flag

On May 1977 the three diputaciones (provincial governments) adopted a provisional flag that was very similar to proposal no.2 and which was the first official flag of Aragon:

The current flag was adopted by the democratically elected Diputación General de Aragón (1979), and was ratified and regulated by Law of 2nd April 1984.
