Phoenix City Guide

United States of America > Phoenix
Located along the banks of the (usually dry) Salt River in central Arizona, Phoenix is the crowning capital of a sprawling desert metroplex that extends from fashionable Scottsdale in the northeast to Glendale and a string of ever expanding towns in the west.

For a taste of history, visit the Pueblo Grande Museum and Cultural Park with its features include a scale model of Pueblo Grande in its prime and exhibits about the environment and way of life of the Hohokam, the Valley's pre-Columbian inhabitants. Pioneer Living History Museum, Pueblo Grande Museum, Phoenix and Museum of History are also some best places to be.

If you enjoy wild life, visit the Papago Park - A wild area of red rock and weather-sculpted buttes. A network of trails and picnic areas runs through it; it also encompasses a zoo and botanical gardens that is most thrilling. So too with Desert Botanical Garden and Phoenix Zoo in Papago Park, and many others.

For the enthusiasts of astrology, you may be thrilled by this ultimate great spot- Arizona State University Planetarium which will definitely cater to your needs.

But, if you like visiting amusement parks, there is a whole list of spectacular places for you to select: Rawhide 1880s Western Town, Goldfield Ghost Town and Mine Tours, and lots of excitement await you there!

Getting There and Moving Around

By air

Sky Harbor International Airport is only a 10-minutes drive from downtown Phoenix. It serves inbound and outbound domestic or international flights here.

By rail

Trains no longer stop at Phoenix's Grand Union Station, as it is currently closed and tucked away on downtown's W. Harrison Street. But, Amtrak buses bring train passengers to Tucson and Flagstaff railway terminals.

By road

A municipal bus, called the Redline, goes from all three major terminals to downtown Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa and also to the Metrocenter shopping center in north Phoenix.

Major routes connect Phoenix with San Diego, Los Angeles, San Bernadino, Las Vegas and El Paso, as well as such in-state destinations as Flagstaff, Tucson and Yuma. In addition, there are also terminals in Glendale, Tempe and Mesa.

Moving Around

The public bus serves downtown area.

There are also car rental and taxi services provided as an alternative for moving around the city.
