Charleston City Guide

United States of America > Charleston
Most people's impression of Charleston was formed from "Gone With The Wind." It's true that the Lowcountry area has been home to battles, especially in the Civil War when Charleston was nearly destroyed by those Damn Yankees.

Charleston is also one of the interesting places to visit. If you want something classic, Charleston has several museums to choose from. Charleston Museum, one of the first museums in the U.S. which exhibits on history, nature, culture and design. Other interesting museums include the Gibbes Museum of Art (a fine collection of American paintings and Japanese woodblock prints) and other fascination.

Besides that, a good way to compliment the historic buildings you'll see in the city is to visit one of the plantation homes in the outlying area. Boone Hall Plantation, east of the city in Mt. Pleasant, is famous for its avenue of oaks and its nine original slave cabins.

You'll have to get out of town a bit to find a beach, but there are several to choose from. Most are located on the coastal islands that surround Charleston harbor and run southwest of town. These breezy beaches are Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, Kiawah Island and other beautiful beaches that offer you fantastic beach activities and sea view.

Indulge yourself in some sports too after visiting the popular attractions. Golf has long been a popular pursuit in the Charleston area. If you want to get a swing of golf, this is the right place to be. In fact, the city claims to be the site of the first golf course in the U.S.
