The country's highest peak, Mt.Apo, is located just a few
hours from the city center. Avid mountain climbers trek
up the mountain slopes in annual pilgrimages to the cloud-covered
top. The forests surrounding the mountain are home to an
exotic collection of flora and fauna.
Nearby sits the Philippine Eagle Nature Center, where researchers
recently hatched the first Philippine Eagle to be born in
captivity. The surrounding forests are a sanctuary to this
monkey-eating eagle, the world's second largest bird, after
the Harpe Eagle of Central and South America.
