Todaiji Temple, founded in mid 8th century, is not only
one of the greatest attractions in Nara, but in Japan as
well. The temple is famous for its great image of Buddha
and its main building, the Daibutsuden (Great Buddha's Hall)
is the largest wooden structure in the world. It houses
an enormous statue of Buddha Vairocana. There is also the
Shoso-in Treasure Repository containing articles which belonged
to Empror Shomu and art objects brought back by early Japanese
travelers.
In March, the Buddhist rite called "Shuni-e (Omizu-tori),"
or literally "Water Drawing Ceremony", is held at the Nigatsu-do
Hall.
