Nikko Edo Mura is a theme park that reproduces the customs,
culture and society of Japan's Edo Period (1603 ~ 1867).
It was a time of peace - for nearly 300 years - remarkably
long for any nation in all of world history. And it was
during this period that the essence, or spiritual base of
the Japanese people became established. The nation was controlled
by the Tokugawa family (not the Imperial Family of the Emperor)
for 15 generations. Edo society was structured into four
distinct classes. The elite class was the samurai, or military;
next came farmers; then artisans, craftsmen; and the lowest
class was merchants or tradespeople. During this period
Japan essentially cut herself off from contact with the
rest of the world. This resulted in the creation of an orijinal
Japanese culture, centered on the common people.
Nikko Edo Mura is unique - its exhibition halls reproduce
events of the period, and its theaters show many historic
figures. No other theme park enables you to directly experience
the people and life of this legendary time in the history
of Japan.
