Background

The Commision for National Symbols, proposed la aw for usage of national symbols (coat of arms, flag, anthem) of Serbia. Besides civil flag (now in ratio 2:3) and State flag (yu!srst.gif) with lesser coat of arms positioned 1/7 of flag lenght to staff side, Presidential (yu!srpr.gif), Prime Minister and President of National Parliament standards were presented.

Proposals have not reached Parliament yet, where 2/3 of the MPs must vote for proposals for them to be adopted. Now, there is polemic going on in media here in Serbia. The most frequent question is "Why crown, Serbia is not monarchy?". That question is not right-minded, considering the number of European republics with crowns on their coats of arms and state flags, e.g. Russia, Poland, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Hungary and San Marino

Ivan Sarajcic, 29 November 2001

Christian Democratic party leader Milan Protic told Vesti that the crown was a symbol of state sovereignty and not necessarily of monarchy.

Christian Berghänel, 29 November 2001
