History of North Yemen

In 1962, the imam of Yemen was overthrown and the Yemen Arab Republic established.

After Egypt and Syria formed the United Arab Republic (UAR) in 1958, and Iraq and Jordan made a Federation - the Arab Union - the UAR and Yemen made a confederation called the United Arab States. There was no flag for this new federation, but Yemen took over the flag of the UAR removing one of the two stars. This flag was officially hoisted on 1 November 1962.

When North and South Yemen united in 1990, the new flag removed the star from it. There had been attempts to unite in 1972 and 1979.
