Description

The Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation was created as the Steamboat Inspection Service within the Department of the Treasury in 1838. It was renamed the Bureau of Navigation in 1884, transferred to the Department of Commerce and Labor in 1903, renamed the Bureau of Navigation and Steamship Inspection in 1932, and again renamed the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation in 1936. Its functions were divided between the Coast Guard and the Customs Service in 1942.

Vessels and installations of the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation blue a blue flag (2:3) with the silhouette of a three-masted sailing ship in white on a red disk. The diameter of the disk was 2/3 of the hoist.
