Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: Field divided diagonally from upper hoist to lower fly, medium blue over white. On the center, the eagle device from the Department of Defense seal. Four stars arrayed on an imaginary line from lower hoist to upper fly, medium blue on the white area of the field and white on the medium blue. Most commonly seen in the indoor/ceremonial form, 52 by 66 inches with golden yellow fringe, cord, and tassels, mounted on a staff with a chrome or nickel-plated spearhead finial. Also comes in other sizes for display aboard ships and from fixed outdoor flagpoles. Approved by the Secretary of Defense on December 6, 1949.

Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: White field with a wide diagonal medium blue band from upper hoist to lower fly. On the center, the eagle device from the Department of Defense seal. Four blue stars arrayed on an imaginary line from lower hoist to upper fly. Sizes and accoutrements as for the Chairman's flag. Approved by the Secretary of Defense on January 20, 1987.
