Overview

Here is a quote from the Flag Bulletin about Surinam contest:
"A competition held during 1975 under government sponsorship, with the intention of developing new designs for the arms and flag, produced 270 different flag suggestions but only 68 alternatives for the coat of arms. The conclusion of the commission established to study the question was that most people were satisfied with the arms in the form that already existed, but that the flag needed changing. Three of the ideas for a flag submitted in the competition were favored by the commission.

One was green with a red triangle (its base along the hoist and its apex at the center of the fly) bearing near the hoist on the triangle a green diamond and golden star similar to those in the coat of arms. Although the commission changed this to a single star of gold, it eventually concluded that the flag was too similar to that of next-door Guyana.

"The other two flags had unequal horizontal stripes. One was similar to the flag actually adopted, except that it had a black star on a central white disc."

"The other had stripes of green, yellow, red, yellow, green, with the Surinam coat of arms on a white panel--altered to the representation in yellow silhouette of the arms against the red stripe. Eventually it was amalgamation of the star from the first flag, the stripes from the second flag, and the ratio of stripe widths from the third flag which found favor as the new official design."
