Svidník is in east Slovakia near the Polish border with 5.000 inhabitants. The town is situated in the northern part of the Nizke Beskydy mountains. The first record is from 1334 (Sudnici). In 1414 another Svidnik  (Zuydnegh) was founded. Up to1943, Vysny (Upper) and Nizny (Lower) Svidnik existed. Then they were united under the name of Svidnik. In the winter of 1914-1915 both villages suffered under the battles of the Russian and Austria-Hungarian troops. However, World War  II took a  greater toll. In Dukla and Svidnik thousands of Soviet, German as well as our soldiers are buried. There are some monuments to war. Svidnik is the centre of the Ruthenians and Ukrainians of Eastern  Slovakia. (Source: the Svidník homepage.)
