The name of the municipality means St. Andrew in the Slovenian Hills, the latter being the name of the hilly region northeast of Maribor, between Drava and Mura rivers. Sveti Andraz was formed in 1998 by secession from the municipality of Destrnik-Trnovska vas, which itself had been formed in 1995 by secession from the municipality of Ptuj.

.The flag is horizontally divided yellow over blue, with the church from the coat of arms in the yellow stripe and the grape in the blue stripe both off set towards hoist. Flag ratio is probably 2:5 or 1:2. It might have been adopted around year 2000.

The coat of arms is in a shield of convex shape ("inflated") filled of blue with a white church set in the crossingpoint of two yellow roads forming a saltire (St. Andrew's Cross) and in base a yellow grape slipped with two leaves. The leaves are approximated in the above image due to the low resolution of the original image.
