Coat of arms

[Coat of arms of Kostel]from Peter Hawlina's website

The municipality of Kostel is reported having adopted a coat of arms and a flag in early 1999 based on a historical coat of arms. Modern artistic rendition of the arms as well as the flag werere designed by Dr. Otorepec.

The coat of arms shown above might not be exactly the one officially adopted. The Genealogia website shows the first coloured version by Valvasor. Earlier representations since the XIVth century were on historical seals and not coloured. The coloured version was first shown in Valvasor's Armorial (XVIIth century), now in National Library in Zagreb, showing a white tower on a green mount in a red field. The coat of arms is canting since the name of the town is derived from Latin castellum. The German name of Kostel was Grafenwarth.
