The flag and coat of arms are prescribed by decision Odlok o
grbu in zastavi Obcine Vitanje, adopted on 26 September 1996, and
published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike
Slovenije, no. 6, 7 February1997, pp. 591-3, with effect on 21
February1997.
The flag is based on the coat of arms,. It is
vertically divided wine red-white- wine red with the coat of arms in
the middle.
The colours are determined as following:

The coat of arms can be blazoned as follows:
Purpure, three escallops proper or In wine red field three shells.
The artistic rendition is copied from the coat of arms in the
parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Vitanje, on the right window
behind the altar. According to the legend, in indetermined long past
there was a lake in the valley of Vitanje community.
The coat of arms is described in the decision in great detail, mainly
the measures in mm refering to the coat of arms on the aforementioned
window. To keep it simple, the coat of arms shall measure 99 x 116
mm.
The decision on the municipal holiday Odlok o dolocitvi obcinskega praznika Obcine Vitanje, adopted on 6 July 1995 and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 42/1995, describes the coat of arms and it' history. It states, among others, that the coat of arms was that of the Vitanje noble rulers, and that it was later taken up by the town of Vitanje, in some undetermined time.
