Presentation of the municipality

Murska Sobota is a city and civic municipality in Prekmurje ('over the Mura river') region of Slovenia. The city was before the First World War under Hungarian rule, and still has a sizeable Hungarian minority.

Description of the flag

The 1996 Decision on the flag and arms was amended in 1998 by Decision Odlok o spremembah odloka o grbu in zastavi Mestne obcine Murska Sobota adopted on 27 January 1998, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 9/1998.

The design of the flag was modified, but the coat of arms was not changed, neither was any other prescription regarding the use of the municipal symbols

The flag is rectangular in ratio 4:9, horizontally divided green (turquoise)-white with the coat of arms set at hoist. Height of the coat of arms is 1/2 the hoist.

Coat of arms

[Coat of arms of Murska Sobota]by Zeljko Heimer

The coat of arms is described as being shield-shaped of three colous - turquoise, golden and silver. The shield is turquoise with silver bar through it and above it three golden suns, one rising, one in zenith and one setting. The shield is outlined with golden line. These suns are actually one disk and two semi-circles. The colors are defined according to the CHROMOTON colour scale as follows:

  • Turquoise: CHROMOTON 204
  • Silver/gray: CHROMOTON 261
  • Golden/yellow: CHROMOTON 106

Vertical flag

The flag may be hoisted vertically, and white field is to viewer's left. That is just opposite to usual flag rotation use, but it is prescribed that way in the decision.

Former flag

[Former flag of Murska Sobota]by Zeljko Heimer

The former coat of arms and flag were prescribed by Decision Odlok o Grbu in Zastavi Mestne Obcine Murska Sobota, adopted on 3 October 1996, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, nr. 56, pp. 4687-9, 11 October 1996, with effect the next day.

The construction sheet of the coat of arms and flag is given as an annex to the Decision in the official gazette.

The flag is based on the coat of arms. It is horizontally divided turquoise-white, with three suns set near the hoist. The flag ratio is 1:3, and the bottom line of the two half-suns is to be on an imaginary line placed 1/2 of the hoist height from the hoist. The diameter of the disk is 1/5 of hoist, 1/10 from both edges to half-suns, and 1/10 between half-suns and full-sun along the hoist axis. The colors of the flag are also given according to CHROMOTON scale, omitting white (i.e. silver of the coat of arms).
