As the national flag with the golden representation of the national coat of arms in the white stripe. (The COA seems to be centered in the "fly part" of the flag, i.e. in the midpoint between the top of the triangle to the fly.) Some earlier sources, like Smith, Flags and Arms Across the World (1980), Talocci, Guide to the Flags of the World (1982); Crampton, Flags of the World (1990); et al.
show the coat of arms as black, but truly Smith mark the image with the reconstruction icon meaning that it was based only on writen description. Weather this have changed since (i.e. from black COA then to golden one today), or the data we have just got more precise in the mean time, remains speculative.

Copied directly from the book Flags of the World by William Crampton (1990), the description is as follows:
'The arms are a secretary bird with a native shield on its breast; above it is a scroll with the motto, "Al Nadr Nila" (Victory is Ours), and beneath it is the name of the country.'

Some years ago Jose Luis Cepero spent some time in Sudan. Casually in TV he sow a flag that is white with the (current) national flag in canton. Since pre-1969 war ensign was in of the same pattern, I assume that Sudanese Navy used after 1969 also a white ensign with the national flag in canton changed. Any confirmation?
