"Ponta do Sol" means "Sun’s Cape" so here we have some canting
helraldry: The flag is quartered, white and blue; in the center, the coat
of arms. These are: azure, a Sun argent (!) with mouth gules and other human
features lined sable, and with 16 short rays or, alternating straight and
wavy rays, the first pointing in the main compass directions. Mural crown
argent with four apparent towers (town rank)
and white scroll reading "VILA DE PONTA DO SOL" in
black upper case letters. (Some variants show only "PONTA
DO SOL" on the scroll.)

Maybe due to an error, this coat of arms is often found with five towers
instead of four, as indicating a city status
that the municipality seat never had (curiously, the flag never shows gyronny,
which would also indicate a putative city status, that’s why I say it is an
error).

Ponta do Sol Municipality, with 43 km2 divided in 3 communes,
is one of the 11 municipalities of Madeira Aut. Reg.,
and there live 8780 inhabitants (1992 data).
