About the flag

It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a background quarterly (meaning town rank) of white and green. The coat of arms is sable, on a mountain vert, a castle argent masoned sable, door and windows gules, flagged of St. George on each of the three towers from cross-poles or, bordure or, a wreath vert bounded gules. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE MONFORTE".
António Martins, 31 Jul 1999

"Monforte" comes from "monte forte", meaning "strong hill", so these are canting arms.
António Martins, 01 Sep 2001
