About the flag

It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a background quarterly (meaning town rank) of red and yellow. The coat of arms is argent on a fess sable three ears of wheath, in dexter chief a “templar” cross, in sinister chief a Christ Knight’s Order cross, in point a wavy fess azure. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE FERREIRA DO ZĘZERE".
António Martins, 19 Jul 1999

"Ferreira" relates to a blacksmith or to his shop (not refered on the coat of arms), "do" means "of the", and "Zęzere" is the name of a river (largest tributary of the Tagus on portuguese territory), depicted on the coat of arms by a wavy fess. The other charges refer to the local importance of wheat (?) and to the Orders Templar and of Christ’s Knights.
