Chitral was semi-independent until 1972 when the Pakistani government abolished all former states in North West Frontier Province. Since 1950, Pakistan was also running all
practical matters of the state, but de-facto, the ruler, or Mehtar, was still recognized as sovereign. The last Mehtar of Chitral was Said-ul-Mulk Nasir (1954-72).
