In 1997 the Royal Norwegian Navy rank of Flaggkommandør, literally translated as Flag Commander but equivalent to the rank of Commodore, was introduced to replace the former rank Kommandør I (the rank of Kommandør II is now just Kommandør). Though the rank contains the designation "flag", it has so far been without a distinct rank flag. This has now been corrected. As of 1 January 1999 the rank flag of a Flag Commander (Commodore) is the Norwegian war ensign with one white star in the canton. A Rear Admiral has two stars, a Vice Admiral three stars, and a full Admiral fours stars. The change was made to adapt to the conventions among Norway's allies.
Date of introduction: 1. January 1999
Use: Navy rank flag
Source: Verbal description
Accuracy: Fair.
