As for dates, 1816 is probably the earliest year for these flags (including
No 6. Commodore), possibly these flags were even established at a later
date, I am not sure because the earliest primary document I have found is
the 1836 navy flag regulations.
Interestingly, the 1836 navy flag regulations show the flags of admirals
with rectangular panels on the hoist side of the flag. I suppose this
indicates that at the time there were less concern for specific proportions
and construction details than there is today.
