Schiedam was founded by Aleida van Henegouwen (Hainault) (1220-1284),
daughter of Count Floris IV, sister of Count Willem II, and guardian of
Count Floris V from 1258-1263. In 1275 she granted city-rights to Schiedam,
and founded a church and a guesthouse. Little did she know that Schiedam
would become the jenever-capital of the world!
The flag of Schiedam was adopted 23 Mar 1962 by municipal resolution.
Description: six equally wide horizontal stripes of yellow and black.
