Woerden municipality is the result of the merger of the former municipalities Harmelen and  Woerden (01-01-2001).

Harmelen is the result of a merger of the former municipalities of Gerverscop, Harmelen and Indijk in 1857.

On the 01-01-1989 the former municipalities of Kamerik, Woerden and Zegveld merged to form the new municipality of Woerden. The municipality kept the former flag.
