Beets is a former municipality in Noordholland with 500 inhabitants on 70
hectares, now in Zeevang municipality. It is 10 km SW of Hoorn and consisted of
the villages Beets (administrative center) and Schardam and bordered on the
Beemster; before that was made a polder Beets suffered greatly from high tides
in the Beemster. The municipal council meets in the council chamber in Beets,
which is on
the first flour of the Dutch Reformed church.
Sierksma's Nederlands vlaggenboek, 1962, has:
the municipal colors are blue, red, and green. The CoA (see: <http://www.ngw.nl/b/beets.htm>
has three hammers, symbolizing the villages Beets, Etershem and Lutteke
Oosthuyzerkoog, who didn't want to co-operate on the building of the Schaderdam
(=Schardam) in 1388; it was resolved that these villages didn't need to pay for
that dam.
