This municipality was formed after the merger in 1857/1863 of the former
municipalities of Haarlemmerliede, Spaarnwoude, Zuid-Schalkwijk and Houtrijk
& Polanen.
Description of the flag: A blue hoist with a white lion passant, armed
red, of which the height is 4/5 of flagheight; three horizontal stripes
in the fly - white - blue - white, proportioned 7:6:7; the middle stripe
is wavy with at least three waves.
