Beverwijk is a municipality in Noordholland with 35.828 inhabitants on 19,56
km˛, and includes Beverwijk and Wijk aan Zee. The place was known in the
11th century as St. Aagtenkerke or St. Aagtendorp; in 1276 it revived market
rights and in 1298 city rights. The municipality is at the mouth of the IJ
river, and used to be marshland, probably with quite a few "bevers"
(beavers). Gardening became quite popular here; vegetables and strawberries were
grown for Amsterdam, at two hours sailing distance. In 1918 the
"Hoogovens" steel-foundries were established here, which provided
employment for the wide environment. At present there is a famous "Zwarte
markt", a huge complex, where everybody can sell and buy everything, every
Saturday - well, it looks more like an Oriental bazaar.
The flag (see <nl-nh-bw.html>) is derived from the top of the municipal
CoA. The lilies are a typical phenomenon of "Kennemerland" (the area
around Haarlem. Sierksma's Nederlands vlaggenboek, 1962, has slightly different
lilies (more French); that flag was adopted 8 Oct 1948.
