Heerenveen/Hearrenfean is a municipality in southeast Friesland in the
Netherlands. It is a rather new municipality (c. 1935), consisting of mergers of
several old 'grietenijen' like Aengwirden and Schoterland, parts of Haskerland
and since the reorganisation of 1984 of some other municipalities as well.
It is former moorland, which after the peat was dug out became a domain of the
Dutch princes. 'Heerenveen' means: moorland of the lord. Nearby is the village
of 'Oranjewoud/Oranjewâld', the summer-residence of the princes of Orange. The
flag is not known as well as the shirt of the soccerteam of Heerenveen.
Jarig Bakker, 27 August 1999
Heerenveen:
"In the weapon description the following words should be changed: Azure
should become blue; Vert should become green; Sable should become black."
I didn't want to keep that description from you, (-: but I guess an editor
inserted what actually should have been executed. (-:
Under Heerenveen it says: Youngest municipality of Friesland (s. 1934) ... Flag:
A blue hoist with in the top hoist a yellow crown lined red with a plain head
band and 5 pearl tips on which five white pearls, and a fly of stripes
white-black-white. Arms: Parted per pale. I azure a broken wheel silver and
beneath it placed bent-wise a sword of the same with a golden hilt; II silver a
planted tree vert, on both sides of the trunk accompanied by a lying blocklet
sable. Above the shield a gold crown of three leaves and two pearls.
Under Municipal flag the picture shows the blue vertical stripe at the hoist to
be about as wide as the length-wise stripes, and the charge to rest on the
imaginary continuation of the division between the upper two stripes.
Nothing is said here about the capital, but fortunately the place Heerenveen has
its own entry where it's described as the capital place of Heerenveen. This too
is a flek, a town.
I expect the crown in the flag is intended as a Lord's crown. I have to assume
the black in the flag is a square of peat, and likewise the blocklets (what
would these have been named had this been a blazon?) on the shield. Both
referring to the name "Lord's peat(-moor)." The blue and white would
then be the field colours of the shield. The shield may well be in part created
out of the Aengwirden and Schoterland shields. For the flag I don't know, since
I don't know whether there were flags for these two municipalities. Some of the
municipal flags that have been established this century had existed for ages,
others had been newly derived from the arms. There's no telling whether those
municipalities were using ancient flags at the time they were merged. (At least,
not from an "Encyclopedia of the modern day Friesland".)
