Franeker/Frentsjer is one of the 11 Frisian cities, located between
Leeuwarden and the Afsluitdijk (Enclosure-dam). It's an old university town and
the place where Friesland's most important yearly sporting event, the 'PC' of
'kaatsen' (striking a ball with the open hand - pelote (?) takes place on the
'Tsju^jela^n'. (a very small green)
The flag was in Hesman's flagbook of 1708 with 4 horizontal stripes YBYB. On the
advice of Klaes Sierksma the flag became simply YB, to avoid confusion with the
flag of Friesland's capital, Leeuwarden (BYBY). In 1984 Franeker merged with
Franekeradeel and it is not known which (if any) flag is used as city-flag.
